Cross River State has unveiled a vibrant new addition to its tourism calendar: the annual “Carnival Parade of Thanksgiving and Festival of Praise,” now officially dubbed the “Jesus Carnival.” Held every Easter season, the event’s debut edition took place on Easter Monday in Calabar, with Governor Apostle Senator Bassey Edet Otu and his wife, Bishop Eyoawan Bassey Otu, leading a spirited procession of thousands.
Designed as a spiritual counterpart to the renowned December Carnival Calabar, the Jesus Carnival merges faith, culture, and gratitude into a dynamic Easter celebration. According to organizers, the event serves as a collective thanksgiving for the state’s progress and the success of its flagship carnival.
Governor Otu, addressing attendees, emphasized divine stewardship: *“Jesus Christ has elevated Cross River State to unprecedented heights in just two years. I proclaimed this a Godly state from day one, with Jesus as our true Governor. Easter Monday will now eternally honor Him and express our gratitude for His blessings.”* He urged Christians to deepen prayers for the state, affirming, “No investment in God’s work is ever in vain,” while applauding clergy and congregants for their unwavering support.
The parade weaved through key landmarks, including Millennium Park, Watt Market, Nelson Mandela Street, and Mary Slessor Roundabout, with participants offering prayers at major intersections. Governor Otu and his wife joined revelers in spirited worship, dancing to gospel beats that echoed across the capital.
Bishop Eyoawan Otu shared that the vision stemmed from a desire to dedicate a segment of the tourism calendar solely to Christ.
“While Carnival Calabar is secular, this festival celebrates our faith and Christ’s sacrifice,” she noted.
Mr. Effiong Ekpenyong, Special Adviser on Event Management, credited the First Lady’s spiritual leadership for the initiative’s success, hailing the carnival as a milestone in the state’s fusion of faith and culture.
“This event transforms Easter into both a sacred observance and a statewide celebration of divine grace,” he stated.
The festivities concluded with electrifying performances by gospel stars, including Cobhams Asuquo, and interdenominational prayers led by Rev. Dr. Takis Etim Caiafas (CAN Chairman), Bishop Emma Isong, and other prominent clerics.
