A boundary dispute between Biakpan and Etono II communities in Cross River State’s Biase Local Government Area turned violent, renewing tensions from bloody clashes in the 1990s and early 2000s that claimed many lives and destroyed properties.

The latest clash left one person shot and five others abducted.

Despite belonging to the same ward, sharing cultural ties, and frequently intermarrying—with many families having relatives on both sides—the conflict erupted after two women from the rival communities fought at a farm around 11:56 a.m.

Both reported the altercation to their communities, escalating hostilities.

An unidentified man was shot in the leg by Etono II members, prompting Biakpan youths to retaliate by abducting five Etono II men.

The injured victim was treated at a clinic by Biakpan’s Paramount Chief, Dr. Enun Bassy Enun.
