UNICAL Suspends 3 Medical Students for Cybercrime & Identity Theft

The University of Calabar has suspended three medical students from the Faculty of Clinical Sciences for their involvement in cybercrime, impersonation, and identity theft. The affected students, Jude Adeola, Osuagwu Joseph Ikechukwu, and Albert-Akwuete Charles, have been barred from academic activities for one session, effective from the 2023/2024 academic year.

The decision was communicated in an official letter signed by the University Registrar, Dr. (Mrs.) Chukwuka I. Icha. The letter stated that the students' actions constituted a serious breach of the University's code of conduct, as outlined in the student handbook, and warranted immediate disciplinary action.

The suspension followed a detailed investigation and review by the Senate Students Disciplinary Committee (SSDC), which recommended the penalty.

The University Senate approved the recommendation, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining high ethical standards, especially among medical students who are expected to uphold integrity and professionalism.

Dr. Icha emphasized that the University would not tolerate any form of misconduct, particularly cybercrime, which undermines the institution's values and reputation. She directed the Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, the Chief Security Officer, and other relevant authorities to ensure strict compliance with the suspension order.
