What was meant to be a solemn farewell mass in honour of the late Chief Maurice Ibok at Ikot Etim-But Community in Akpabuyo Town, Cross River State, took a tragic turn on March 7, 2025.
Gideon Nwosu, an indigene of Enugu State, was brutally stabbed to death during the ceremony, which occurred at about 9:10 AM.
GRASSROOT REPORTERS gathered that the incident involved one Efio Effiong, the suspected assailant, who allegedly broke a bottle, rushed onto the stage, and stabbed Nwosu in the throat before fleeing the scene.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
A source, who preferred anonymity, told GRASSROOT REPORTERS that the late Nwosu was attacked while performing with a live band. According to the source, the suspect suddenly disrupted the event, jumped onto the stage, and stabbed Nwosu in the throat during his performance.
Upon receiving a distress call, the Cross River State police operatives from the Sting Unit Robot swiftly responded, evacuating the victim's body to the mortuary.
Investigations have been launched, and efforts have been intensified to track down the fleeing suspect.
