Okoi Obono Obla |
The Democratic Alliance Group has issued a stern rebuke against Chief Okoi Obono Obla, describing his recent public outburst as a “TikTok-like rant” that exposes his profound ignorance of right and wrong.
The group’s statement comes in response to Obla’s appearance on Beatrice Akpala’s “Own Your Story Podcast,” where he allegedly made incoherent and reckless remarks about the political landscape of Cross River South ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a press release dated February 13, 2025, the group expressed its dismay at Obla’s behaviour, labeling it a “show of shame and gross irresponsibility” that contradicts the principles of statesmanship.
The statement questioned Obla’s credibility, asking, “How more jobless could an elder be?” and challenging his connection to Cross River South.
The group also revisited Obla’s controversial past, recalling his quarantine by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on March 23, 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The ICPC had accused Obla of N10m fraud. The Democratic Alliance Group noted that Obla’s media appearances should reflect humility and remorse, given his disgraceful exit from the Buhari administration over allegations of certificate forgery and financial malfeasance. Instead, they accused him of perpetuating “vulgar narratives” and meddling in affairs beyond his purview.
The statement further highlighted the achievements of Cross River State under the leadership of Governor His Excellency, Senator (Apostle) Prince Bassey Edet Otu, and Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, the youngest Senator in the 10th Assembly of the Nigerian Senate.
The group praised the “magnificent dividends of democracy” delivered by the duo, emphasizing Senator Ekpenyong’s impactful tenure within just 18 months in office. They described his accomplishments as a case of “res ipsa loquitur” (the facts speak for themselves) and questioned Obla’s audacity to suggest any form of political reallocation in Cross River South.
The Democratic Alliance Group also drew attention to Obla’s alleged history of misconduct, including accusations of falsifying his WAEC results to gain admission into a tertiary institution decades ago. They characterized his recent actions as the “last kick of a dying horse,” signaling a desperate attempt to remain relevant.
As a youth group, the Democratic Alliance issued a strong warning to Obla, urging him to refrain from crossing political boundaries. They asserted that he lacks the “locus standi” to determine political outcomes in Cross River South and called on him to desist from further political recklessness. “It is still time for governance,” the statement concluded, “Obla should henceforth desist from political recklessness.”
The statement reads in full:
Our attention has been drawn to a “TikTok-like” rant by one (Barrister?) Okoi Obono Obla, confidently expressing his thorough ignorance of what is wrong and what is right. Obla, a political outcast who recently featured in Beatrice Akpala’s “Own Your Story Podcast”, was on his usual rambling and incoherent permutations, recklessly suggesting a pattern of value allocation in Cross River South ahead of 2027. How more jobless could an elder be?
Is Okoi Obono Obla now from Cross River South? We are particularly miffed at what we term not only a show of shame and gross irresponsibility, but a clear anti-thesis of statesmanship.
Lest we forget, during the Covid-19 era, 23rd March, 2020 specifically, Obla was “quarantined” by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), for being a carrier of corruption and fraud personified. We supposed that Obla’s media appearance at any given time should speak humility, sober reflection and sincere apology to Cross Riverians and his person, having been disgracefully kicked out of the Buhari administration on cases of certificate forgery and financial malfeasance, rather, the media-happy and meddlesome interloper is wandering about with his illusionary character of vulgar narratives.
Suffice it to say that every well-meaning Cross Riverian is savouring in the euphoria of applaudable magnificent dividends of democracy dolled out by the Governor, His Excellency, Senator (Apostle) Prince Bassey Edet Otu and the youngest Senator in the 10th Assembly of the Nigerian Senate, Sen. Asuquo Ekpenyong – a fact the ostracized Obla echoed in admittance. We cannot overemphasize the impacts Senator Ekpenyong has had within 18 months in the Senate – it is a case of “res ipsa loquitur”. Why then does Obla contemplate shortchanging Cross River South, assuming without conceding that he holds the status of "Roma locuta est, causa finita est"?
Okoi Obono Obla had long fallen into the habit that tarnishes idealism and his envisaged prospects, traceable a few decades back, given that he allegedly falsified his WAEC result to gain admission into tertiary institution. These new stunts suggest a last kick of a dying horse.
As a Youth Group, we send strong warning to the embattled Obla to refrain from crossing political boundaries, as he lacks the “locus standi” to adjudge who gets what, when, and how, in Cross River South. It is still time for governance, Obla should henceforth desist from political recklessness.
Democratic Alliance group.
