In a recent internal memo dated February 10, 2025, the Student Affairs Division of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has issued a stern reminder to students and staff regarding the institution's dress code policy.
The memo, signed by the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Egaga Patrick, addresses the growing concern over indecent and provocative dressing on campus.
The memo states: "The Directorate has noticed with growing concern the intransigence, rate, preponderance and proliferation of indecent, provocative and unofficial dressing mostly by students and especially by some female staff, who, ordinarily, should act as models."
The university has explicitly listed several clothing items that are now prohibited on campus. These include:
- Short skirts or gowns above the knee
- Open backs
- Crop tops
- Braless tops and gowns
- Spaghetti straps
- Sleeveless tops
- Handless gowns
- Bikinis
- See-through (transparent) apparels revealing contours and cleavages
- Bum shorts revealing laps
- Slit skirts
- Body hugs
- V-necks exposing breasts
- Tubes
- Strapless dresses
- Ragged jeans
- Shorts above the knee
- Sleeveless shirts
- Singlets
- Lingeries
- Sagged trousers
The memo further warns that "any student or staff clad in regalia or paraphernalia as mentioned above will be denied effective access into any of the university facilities or be appropriately sanctioned."
To enforce this directive, the university has established a combined Security and Administrative/Students Task Force to monitor compliance.
The memo concludes with a cautionary note: "Please kindly resist the temptation to be caught pants-down."
