President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday signed two bills into law, establishing new federal universities in Osun and Ekiti States.
The newly approved institutions are the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies, Iragbiji, Osun State, and the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences, Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State.
The signing ceremony, held in Abuja, underscores the administration's commitment to addressing the educational needs of Nigerians while fostering research, innovation, and economic growth. President Tinubu emphasized that these specialized universities will serve as hubs for training professionals in agriculture, science, and technology, ultimately enhancing Nigeria's competitiveness in the global economy.
"These institutions are not just centers of learning but catalysts for national development. They will equip our youth with the skills and knowledge needed to drive innovation and contribute meaningfully to our economy," President Tinubu stated.
The establishment of these universities comes on the heels of other recent educational initiatives by the Tinubu administration. On February 3, 2025, the President approved the creation of the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET) in Ogoni town of Tai, Rivers State. Additionally, the Federal Government has taken over a forfeited private university in Southern Kaduna, transforming it into a federal institution.
According to the National Universities Commission (NUC), Nigeria currently has 63 federal universities, 63 state universities, and 149 private universities. The addition of these new institutions is expected to expand access to quality education and address the growing demand for higher education in the country.
The establishment of the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies in Osun State is particularly significant, as it aims to address critical issues in agricultural development and food security. Similarly, the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences in Ekiti State will focus on advancing technological innovation and environmental sustainability.
President Tinubu's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, highlighted the administration's broader vision for education. "These universities are part of a strategic plan to ensure that Nigeria remains at the forefront of global advancements in science, technology, and agriculture. They will also create opportunities for our young people to thrive and contribute to national development," Onanuga said.
