In a move to enhance grassroots development, Governor Bassey Otu has announced plans to create Ward Development Committees in all 196 wards of Cross River State. The initiative aims to ensure government projects and policies effectively reach local communities, with oversight from local government legislators to improve transparency and accountability.
Speaking during the distribution of official vehicles to leaders of the local government legislature across the 18 Local Government Councils, Governor Otu reiterated his administration’s dedication to strengthening local governance. He highlighted that the Ward Development Committees would act as direct channels for implementing and monitoring development projects, while fostering fairness in appointments and representation.
“The local government is closest to the people, and for democracy to thrive, we must empower its structures. These committees will bridge the gap between the government and the people, ensuring every ward receives adequate attention,” Governor Otu stated.
He also urged local government leaders to utilize the provided resources effectively, emphasizing that greater support comes with increased responsibility.
Hon. Eneji Sam Ashibi, Leader of the Obudu Local Government Legislature and Leader of Leaders of the 18 council areas, thanked the governor for the initiative and the vehicles. He pledged their commitment to ensuring governance benefits reach the grassroots.
