Cross River: 3 Killed, Properties Destroyed in Communal Clash

Three people have been confirmed dead, and several others injured following a violent clash between two factions in Iko Esai Community, Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday evening, February 10, 2025, has left the community in turmoil, with reports of houses burned and residents fleeing for safety.

The conflict stems from a long-standing power tussle between factions loyal to the dethroned Village Head, Chief Obio Arong Owai, and the incumbent youth leadership. Tensions escalated during a celebration of a newly selected Youth President, leading to a deadly altercation.

A community source revealed that one of the deceased, Christian Esiri, was shot by a relative of Chief Owai, while the other two victims were members of Chief Owai’s family.

The violence erupted when the new youth executive, loyal to Chief Owai, blocked the incumbent Youth President from passing through the village square. This sparked a confrontation, resulting in gunfire and chaos. The situation worsened as angry youths set houses ablaze, including Chief Owai’s compound, forcing residents to flee to nearby communities.

In response to the crisis, the Chairman of Akamkpa Local Government Council, Hon. Felix Akposi, swiftly intervened to quell the violence. He condemned the destruction of property and loss of lives, urging the warring factions to embrace peace and resolve their differences through civil means.

“The resources that should be channeled into developmental projects are now being diverted to restore order—an avoidable and regrettable expenditure,” Akposi stated.

He also warned against further attacks on security operatives deployed to the area and emphasized the importance of maintaining law and order for sustainable development.

The Divisional Police Officer of Uyanga, alongside military personnel, has been deployed to assess the damage and restore order.

As investigations continue, the community remains on edge, with fears that the death toll may rise due to machete wounds sustained by some individuals.
