Chieftancy Crisis: Cross River Police Arrest 3 Over Murder in Akamkpa Community

The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three suspects linked to the violent chieftaincy crisis in Iko-Esai village, Akamkpa Local Government Area.

The suspects, identified as Chief Obrt Obia, Chief Elijah Okomison, and Clement Akposi, are facing charges of murder, arson, malicious damage, and conspiracy.

The crisis, which has plunged the community into chaos, took a deadly turn when Christian Abakun, a 30-year-old indigene, was shot and killed by Sunday David, another resident, using a locally made pistol.

Two other individuals sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment. The violence also resulted in the destruction of eight buildings, two vehicles, and ten motorcycles.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, the Police Command confirmed that the case file and suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID) in Calabar for further investigation.

Commissioner of Police, CP Gyogon Augustine Grimah, has assured the public of a thorough and impartial investigation, emphasizing that all parties involved will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

He urged residents of Iko-Esai and Akamkpa Local Government to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement by providing relevant information to aid the investigation.

“The Police Command is committed to restoring peace and order in Iko-Esai and will work tirelessly alongside other agencies to achieve this goal,” the statement read. Residents were encouraged to report any suspicious activities or information to the nearest police station or the Police Command Headquarters in Calabar.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ugbo Irene, reiterated the Command’s dedication to ensuring justice for the victims and preventing further escalation of the crisis.
