Nigeria Police Commits PR Blunder Over Dismissed Officer’s Reappearance

Police Constable Liyomo Okoi

The Nigeria Police Force is facing backlash after a press release praising a constable for bravery failed to mention he was dismissed in 2022 for gross misconduct.

The statement, issued on January 28, 2024, debunked rumors about an injured officer being part of newly recruited constables, describing him as a diligent officer injured in the line of duty.

However, investigations by GRASSROOT REPORTERS reveal the officer is Police Constable Liyomo Okoi, dismissed on August 8, 2022, for flogging a man with a machete.

The incident, captured in a viral video, led to his dismissal by the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, who condemned the act as a violation of ethical standards.

The press release, signed by Force PRO ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, praised the officer’s courage but omitted his dismissal, sparking outrage. Critics accuse the police of whitewashing misconduct and undermining public trust.

The controversy highlights the need for transparency and accountability within the Nigeria Police Force as it struggles to rebuild public confidence.
