The Benue State Police Command has apprehended two suspects in connection with an armed robbery incident in Kwande Local Government Area. The arrests were disclosed by the state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Hassan Yabanet, in a press statement on Tuesday.
According to the statement, three brothers traveling to Kwande on January 5, 2025, fell victim to a robbery scheme orchestrated by a motorcycle rider they had hired in Obudu, Cross River State.
The cyclist allegedly diverted from the agreed route and alerted his gang members to ambush the travelers. However, one of the brothers, who understood the language used by the cyclist, overheard the plot and warned his siblings. The brothers attempted to escape but were pursued into the bush by the gang.
The attackers robbed them of their money, which included CFA francs and naira. Tragically, one of the victims was lynched, another sustained serious injuries, while the third managed to escape.
Police investigations led to the arrest of two suspects, identified as Terhemba Abugh and Shima Terseer, both from the same area. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend other individuals involved in the crime.
The Commissioner condemned the act, describing it as barbaric, and reassured the public of the command’s commitment to ensuring justice and maintaining security across the state.
