Governor Bassey Otu

Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has signed into law two bills that establish the Cross River State University of Education and Entrepreneurship in Akamkpa and the State College of Agriculture in Obubra.

The signing ceremony, held during the State Executive Council meeting at the Traditional Rulers’ Council chambers in Calabar on Wednesday, marked a significant milestone in the administration's efforts to strengthen education and agriculture in the state.

The newly signed laws, titled the Cross River State University of Education and Entrepreneurship Law 2024 and the Cross River State College of Agriculture Law 2024, will transform the former College of Education in Akamkpa and the Obubra campus of the University of Cross River State into fully-fledged institutions dedicated to education, entrepreneurship, and agricultural development.

Governor Otu expressed his gratitude to the State House of Assembly for their swift passage of the bills and reiterated his administration’s commitment to appointing governing councils and principal officers for both institutions in the coming weeks. “These institutions are pivotal for the socio-economic transformation of our state, equipping our people with the skills and knowledge needed to drive growth,” he stated.

The bills were presented for the governor’s assent by the Clerk of the State Legislature, Mrs. Kate Ubi, Esq., and the Commissioner for Education, Senator Steven Odey, underscoring the collaboration between the executive and legislative arms of government.

Additionally, the State Executive Council approved five new draft bills for submission to the State House of Assembly. These include the Cross River State Roads Fund Law 2024, Rural Access Roads Authority Law 2024, Lotteries and Gaming Agency Law 2024, Water User Association Law 2024, and the Amendment of the Counterpart Fund Law 2024.

Governor Otu expressed confidence that these legislative initiatives would further accelerate infrastructure development, improve governance, and enhance public services across the state. "We are taking deliberate steps to ensure sustainable progress for our people," he affirmed.
