Mathias Amunde Ugwe |
A 29-year-old man, Mathias Amunde Ugwe, accused of murdering his mother for ritual purposes on Christmas Day, has been apprehended after weeks on the run. The suspect is currently in custody at the Obudu Divisional Headquarters of the Nigerian Police Force.
The gruesome incident took place on December 25, 2024, when Mrs. Justina Amunde, the suspect’s biological mother, was reportedly killed in cold blood.
Authorities allege that Amunde also cut off his mother’s hair for ritual purposes before disposing of her body in a well.
A well-coordinated operation led to his arrest in Batriko, Eastern Boki Local Government Area. The team included an Investigation Police Officer (IPO), the Special Adviser on Security to the Obudu Local Government Chairman, the Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (Obudu Chapter), and officers from the Nigerian Police Force.
Adding to the horror, the ritualist who allegedly instructed Amunde to cut his mother’s hair for the rituals has also been arrested. Both men are now in custody, though the third accomplice, who is believed to have assisted in dumping the victim’s body in the well, remains at large.
This arrest comes after extensive efforts by authorities to locate the suspect, who had been on the run since the shocking murder.
