By GRASSROOT REPORTERS

In a harrowing tale of betrayal, greed, and ritual killings, the community of Otokutu in Ughelli South, Delta State, is grappling with the shocking murder of Paulinus, popularly known as Easy Boutique, by his close associate Efe Money and accomplices, including the Chief Priest of Otokutu, Chief Okiemute.

Paulinus, a businessman with one of the biggest boutiques in Otokutu, was brutally murdered, beheaded, and subjected to gruesome ritual practices. According to reports, after the heinous act, his body was disposed of in a nearby river. When it floated to the surface three days later, the perpetrators retrieved it, disemboweled him, tied heavy blocks to his remains, and threw the body back into the river, ensuring it sank to the bottom. While his head was later recovered by police, his body remains unrecovered, presumed consumed by river creatures.

The tragedy unfolded after the suspects extorted over 20 million naira in ransom from Paulinus's family, despite already taking his life. Efe Money, the prime suspect, allegedly forged deeds to properties purchased by Paulinus, using the fake documents to cover up the millions he had siphoned from his late friend.

Investigations and Arrests

The case, initially reported in September by human rights activist Comr. Israel Joe, gained momentum when CSP Aliyu Shaba led a police squad to exhume Paulinus’s head from the shrine. The shrine, long avoided by locals due to its ominous reputation, became the site of gruesome revelations about the conspirators’ actions.

Israel Joe, who has received threats from Efe Money while he remains in custody, vowed to ensure justice is served. "No one has ever threatened me and succeeded," he said, expressing his commitment to ensuring the culprits face the full weight of the law.

Betrayal by a Trusted Friend

Paulinus’s murder underscores the dangers of misplaced trust. Efe Money, who allegedly benefited greatly from Paulinus’s generosity and business acumen, masterminded the killing of the man who had uplifted him. The betrayal has left the community in shock and mourning, as they grapple with the loss of a promising entrepreneur.

Call for Justice

The public outcry against the suspects has been overwhelming. Many, including Joe, are calling for swift and severe punishment for Efe Money and his accomplices, emphasizing the need for justice in the face of such cruelty. "Efe and his likes don't deserve to live among us," Joe declared.

This tragic case serves as a stark reminder of the perils of envy and betrayal among friends. As the investigation continues, authorities have assured the public that justice will prevail.

Warning to the Public

Community leaders and activists have urged individuals to be cautious in their relationships, particularly with those exhibiting jealousy or envy. "It is better to have no friends than to be surrounded by evil people," Joe advised.

For now, the people of Otokutu await justice, hoping that the legacy of Paulinus will inspire vigilance and unity in the face of such harrowing events.
