Prof. Florence Obi |
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi has stated that the school charges of the university is the lowest charged by a federal university in south south and south east of Nigeria.
Students of the university who spoke with GRASSROOT REPORTERS lamented over the recent increment of school fees and other charges by over 200% by the management of the institution led by Prof. Obi.
They said the management of the university increased school fees to a level that they cannot pay, with a late payment penalty of over N5,000 and closure of the fee payment portal.
A student simply identified as Joy said:
"Some of the newly admitted students have forfeited their admissions because their expectations have been cut short. Both new and returning students are unable to pay their fees due to the hike in school charges. Students are dying in silence."
UNICAL Fees Is The Lowest... VC
In an interview with Sparkling FM on Monday in Calabar, monitored by GRASSROOT REPORTERS, Prof. Obi said the university charges the lowest when compared to other federal universities in South South and South East.
She debunked claims that the university gets allocation from the federal government for the running of the university.
She said: "Among the federal universities in the whole of south south and south east, UNICAL fees remains the least, that is to tell you that we have not actually increased nothing.
"There is no allocation that is given to universities. When you talk about allocation, you are talking about allocation for the upkeep of the students. There is no allocation for the running of universities, for instance, to provide electricity and other facilities. No government gives you that, you generate the money from students."
