Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Kebbi State Governor, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu addressing journalists in Abuja, January 16, 2022

The national convention of the All Progressives Congress(APC) will take place in February, governors of the party affirmed on Sunday night.

The decision was taken on Sunday night in Abuja, by no fewer than 20 out of the 26 governors at a meeting held at the Kebbi State Governor’s Lodge in the Asokoro District .

The meeting ended at about 11:30 pm.

Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Kebbi State Governor, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu said the forum passed a vote on confidence on Gov. Buni, chairman of the Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee.

The forum he said also passed a confidence vote on governors Abubakar Sani Bello and Gboyega Oyetola, who are also members of the convention committee.

Athough the governors agreed to go ahead with the February convention, Bagudu said no specific date was agreed upon.

He said the CECPC would have to consult with other stakeholders to harmonize all positions and announce a suitable date.

Governors at the meeting were Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo), Nasir el-Rufai (Kaduna), Yahaya Bello (Kogi), Abubakar Sani Bello (Niger), Mohammed Abubakar Badaru (Jigawa), Bello Matawalle (Zamfara) and Dave Umahi (Ebonyi).

Others were Gboyega Oyetola (Osun), Babajide Sanwoolu (Lagos), Simon Bako Lalong (Plateau), Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa), Mai Mala Buni (Yobe), Hope Uzodinma (Imo), Ben Ayade (Cross River), Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq (Kwara), Babagana Zulum (Borno), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje (Kano), Abubakar Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi) and Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti).

The Sunday meeting was called over speculations that the Buni committee was planning to postpone the convention.

President Muhammadu Buhari had on 22 November 2021, met with Bagudu, Buni and Governor of Jigawa Abubakar Badaru at the State House in Abuja, where it was agreed that the convention should hold in February, as suggested by the Progressive Governors.

No specific date was fixed then and it still has not been fixed.
