President Mohammadu Buhari in his Independence speech spoke about the Twitter Ban which took effect from the 5th of June, 2021.
According to him, the social media is a platform for dissemination of Information but some users use it to do other inappropriate activities.
"Following the suspension of Twitter operations, Twitter Inc. reached out to the Federal Government of Nigeria to resolve the deadlock. Subsequently, I constituted Presidential Committee to engage Twitter to explore the possibility of resolving the issue.
"The Committee, along with the Technical Team has engaged with the Twitter company to address a number of issues which include;
National Security and Cohesion;
Registration, Physical presence and Representation;
Fair Taxation;
Dispute Resolution; and
Local Content.
These issues must be reviewed and must be met before the Twitter Ban will be lifted.
"As a country, we are committed to ensure digital companies use their platform to enhance the lives of our citizens, respect Nigeria sovereignty, cultural values and promote online safety", the President said.
