It has now been confirmed that Argentine striker, Lionel Messi will leave Barcelona after the club failed to renew his contract.
In a dramatic change of events, the Nou Camp legend will not play for the club again after his deal expired earlier this summer.
The 34-year-old had agreed a pay-cut as part of a new five-year deal but – Barca now announced a renewal became impossible due to financial regulations.
The club said: “Despite having reached an agreement between FC Barcelona and Leo Messi and with the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, it cannot be formalized due to economic and structural obstacles (Spanish LaLiga regulations).”
