Kerosene Explosion Kills UNICAL Student, 3 Family Members

A 300 level student of the Department of Economics, University of Calabar, Mathias Nyong yesterday, August 24, 2020, died in a kerosene explosion on his birthday.

The tragedy also claimed the lives of three other family members, including his sister's husband, an indigene of Mbiabong Ukwa, Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State, who came to visit them.

The incident which took place at their residence at Ikot Ekpo, around Scanobo Filling Station, Calabar, Cross River State, also claimed the live of his younger sister who is currently writing the ongoing West African Senior Secondary Examination (WASSCE).

A resident of the area who spoke with GRASSROOT REPORTERS said.

"When he (Mathias) came back from church yesterday evening, he was told to put kerosene in the lantern. He asked his sister to help him do that while he was conducting tutorial for his younger sister who is writing WAEC examinations. While the sister tried to put the kerosene, it exploded and killed all the occupants of the house, including their brother Inlaw who came to visit them.
