Finally, Ayade Set To Conduct LG Election

By Obio Monday

The  governor of Cross River State, Sir Ben Ayade has finally decided to conduct local government elections.

This is coming on the heels of public outcry over the failure of the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission to conduct elections since after the tenure of the last elected officials left office in 2016. The commission had blamed the state government for not providing funds for the elections.

This development was announced by an aide to the governor, Mr. Ulayi Emmanuel. It reads:
"In the discharge of his statutory function as contained in Section 204 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended and in accordance with Section 20 (1)a & b of the Cross River State Electoral law, His Excellency, Sen. Prof. Ben Ayade (KSJI) , Governor of Cross River State has approved and directed the conduct of LG Elections in the state".

He further stated " accordingly, all political parties, stakeholders and the general public are hereby invited to the declaration of election tomorrow, 27th November, 2019 at the commission's (CROSIEC) headquarters by 2pm".

Recalled that a federal high in Calabar had declared unconstitutional the running of the local governments in Cross River State without elected officials.
