Police Arrest 10 in Calabar for trying to undergo initiation into a cult group

Ten youths were on Friday in Calabar paraded by Cross Rover State police command for allegedly being involved in attempted murder, armed robbery, kidnapping and cultism.

Parading the suspects, the Police Public Relations Officer, Irene Ugbo stated that the suspects were arrested while trying to undergo an initiation into Skylo, a secret cult group at Hawkins Cemetery, in Calabar South LGA of the state around 12: pm on April 27,this year.

The PPRO stated that on April 28 this year at about 11:30hrs upon distress call, one Ette Akamba who resides at Iboko community and other members of Skylo confraternity fell sick and died on 20/4/2019 at about 1340hours .
Consequently, members of Skylo confraternity came in their numbers on 27/4/2019 at about 1140hours to commemorate his burial and caused a breach of peace within the Calabar metropolis.
Ugbo stated that upon tip off, men of Anti-Cultism/kidnapping squad swung into action where 10 members of the confraternity were nabbed by the police.
The police spokesperson averred that upon interrogation, suspects all confessed to the crime adding that suspects will soon be charged to Court.

However, upon interaction with journalists, two of the suspects admitted that they were lured to the cemetery by two of their friends without a knowledge that their friends have hatched plans to make them attend the initiation ceremony without their knowledge.

In another development, four other suspects were also paraded by police for attempted murder. She stressed that on April 14, 2019, one Cyprian David of Edondon village in Obubra LGA, reported at Obubra Police Division Headquarters that same date at 1930hr, that while he was in his shop , a group of boys numbering over ten attacked him and got him beaten to coma.
Ugbo stated that while he was unconscious, the sum of N48,500 being his sales for that day was stolen away by his attackers stressing that 4 of the attackers had been arrested while six were still at large.
